Tables Available at Exam?

Hi I was looking on the CAS website for information regarding tables given at the exam. For example, distributions, distribution tables, log functions etc... If so, where can I find a copy of what would be given?

  • To the best of our knowledge the CAS hasn't released a consistent copy of the tables you would get on the exam. In general, if you need something it is included either in the Tables or the Formula buttons which open a new window with the information in the Pearson environment.

The CAS website contains a link to the Pearson demo exam (direct link is the second link below).

    https://www.casact.org/exams-admissions/computer-based-testing

Within the demo exam, on any question you can click Tables at the lower left corner of the screen to see how CAS tables would look in the exam environment. The normal distribution table is likely to remain unchanged. However, the "Exam 8 Tables" are currently misleading because:

    1. The CAS hasn't updated the Pearson demo to reflect the ISO reading now uses 2019 tables instead of 2014.
    2. The CAS Exam 8 Tables gives the entirety of the ISO, NCCI circular manuals... This won't be the case in the real exam as you'll only get the tables you need. So you do have to memorize the methods for solving those problems as you can't rely on seeing the full manuals in the exam despite what the demo shows.

None of the sample questions show the "Formulas" button. However, question 7 shows a "Model Output" button which pops up a new window with the information, just like the Formulas button would with a formula sheet.

There's no guarantee the CAS will give you any particular formula, even the complicated lognormal ones. To minimize your memorization pain it is reasonable to assume the longer the formula the more likely the CAS will give it to you.

One last tip: Sometimes two questions will use the same formulas yet one question has the Formula button and the other doesn't. It's always worth clicking the Formula button when it's there to see what free information you're given and could refer back to from another problem. So make sure to keep an eye out for it - it can be tough to notice it's there because you're focused on looking at the spreadsheet and the formula button occurs above the spreadsheet toolbars, so may be overlooked...

  • Hi. Do you want to revise your interpretation of how CAS will provide tables on exam comparing to what you thought last year. I am asking because I saw this sentence is clearly mentioned in the syllabus this year: "The entire manual will be provided both in the study kit and on the exam".

    Thank you!

  • No, our opinion as to how the CAS will likely provide the tables on the exam is unchanged. Our decision is based on:

    1. The CAS having had this statement in the syllabus in a prior sitting and not honoring it during the exam at the time.
    2. The cover page(s) to the CAS 2022 study kit which states "Candidates should not rely on have the complete circular/manual available during the exam administration."
  • Thanks for all the information!
